Description
It is known that Pieve di San Pietro was the first church in Pianezza, but in the course of the 1500s it had a period of regression and destruction. The church of St. Paul appears in documents from 1245, which refer to a church out of Pianezza, near Turin; subsequent documents seem to indicate that the home of the rector of St. Paul was located in the village of Pianezza. During the pastoral visit of Cardinal Cybo in 1546, the Sacrament of the Confirmation was administered only in the church of St. Paul, which makes it think of its central location convenient for everyone but we have the definitive attribution of the name of St. Paul to the church of the Borgo only with the pastoral visit of Monsignor Peruzzi in 1584; the Church was provided with Baptismal Source. It had a dramatic end: in 1639, during the "war of brothers and sisters" between regent Maria Cristina of France and his brother-in-law Thomas Tommaso and Cardinal Maurizio, the French army plundered Pianezza, in the church they found the accumulated goods of the inhabitants: the soldiers raped what they could take away and gave fire to the rest. The church burned for three days and was destroyed. In addition to this, began the institutional decline: at the request of the Marquis Carlo Emanuele Filiberto Giacinto di Simiana, Bishop of Turin, Monsignor Giulio Cesare Bergera joined the two parishes in the parish priest of Pieve, Don Domenico Salomone. It was September 22nd , 1660, this church lasted only fifty years.
The works for the construction of the present church began in 1727, on the design of the architect Giuseppe Castelli, on the space made before the door of the Castle of Pianezza, at the bottom of the old village, and ended in 1729; to build it, were used recovered materials of the demolished St. Paul church. In 1731 the consecration of the church, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. The church was, and it is, without a bell tower, the Borgo’s tower was used as a backdrop (it is still used today with the bell tower of San Rocco), also used by the commune.
The church is formed by a central nave and two lateral, it has a barrel vault, a semicircular apse and it is lit by six large windows in the central nave, the floor is in Barge stones. In the side naves there are six marble altars with altarpiece, Carlo Filippo Brambilla is the author of the main altarpiece.
"This church will not last long. The architraves rest on the vault, [also] suffers some moisture from the midnight part ... the walls scratch with the risk of falling (pieces) on the table when celebrating, as it has already passed, and all this because of an embankment not far from the walls. The floor is bad-cooked brick, mostly worn, and when they sweep the church, it forms a dust that besmirch ornaments. The front door should be redone because it is not too secure and badly set. Finally there is too much light because of the six windows and three glassy oats." This was the fear of our ancestors, but, fortunately, after centuries, prophecy has not yet been realized.
